Firstly, you will need to go to your local hockey shop and look around, you need to pick up a lot of sticks. Every stick has a different feel and a different flex, you will need to give each stick a flex and lean on it to see how it feels. Also every stick has a different weight so you will need to find your preference whether you like your sticks light or a little heavy. There are many different brands out there and that shouldnt make your decision because someone else has that stick or a professional is using that stick, you need to find what is right for you.
Secondly, you will have to cut the stick down or insert a knob depending on your size. Every player has their personal preference on how tall they want their stick. Most people say that your stick should be at your nose when you're standing on skates. I personally like the stick a little taller then that just to give me a little bit more out on the ice.
Once you have that figured out you will then need to tape up your knob. You need to be able to have some grip out there on the ice. Getting hit and hacked on the stick you're going to need to be able to hold on tightly. Having a knob makes it easier to hold on tight. I like to have a good sized knob and then tape it down the shaft a bit for grip when I am taking face offs. The knob isn't a primary concern when making your perfect stick.
Next you will want to give your stick some grip. The shaft gets very slippery when water gets on it from the ice and you aren't going to want to drop your twig. I like to grip the stick a lot just because I'm constantly taking shots and getting hacked so I always need to have a grip on it.
